If you have been waiting for your chance to drive the new 2018 Jeep WranglerJL with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and the eTorque mild hybrid system, your wait should just about be over. We have received word that the first examples of the first-ever Wrangler hybrid have started arriving in dealerships around the country, so while your local dealership may not have one in stock yet, some hunting around – or some continued patience – should allow you to check out the turbo hybrid Jeep in person.

The new 2.0-liter turbo hybrid engine in the 2018 Wrangler JK offers 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, making the rugged Jeep pretty quick. The combination of the mild hybrid system and the forced induction setup creates a power plant that has no lag of any kind, as the electric torque gets the vehicle moving and the turbocharged power kicks in a second later. This make the engine great for daily driving – with the best fuel economy of the lineup – but the instant-on electric torque coupled with the boosted power of the 2.0-liter engine makes this a solid off-road engine as well.
The most significant aspect of this new engine option is fuel economy, with the four-door models offering 22mpg in the city, 24mpg on the highway and 22mpg combined. For comparison, the Wrangler JL with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and the same four-door configuration and the same 8-speed automatic transmission gets an EPA rating of 18mpg in the city, 23mpg on the highway and 20mpg combined, so while the highway numbers aren’t much better, the turbo hybrid Wrangler is far more fuel-friendly around town.

Best of all, the 2.0-liter turbo hybrid engine option in the new Wrangler is only $1,000, so it won’t cost you much more to pick the engine that will save you the most at the pump.
If you are considering a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL and you aren’t sold on which engine to buy, I strongly recommend that you drive one with the new turbocharged hybrid 4-cylinder before deciding on one or the other. Of course, if you are only interested in the V6, your decision should be easier, but having driven the new Jeep with both engines – I would be inclined to pick the turbo two-liter.
